Ave Maria

Here’s the thing: Ave Maria isn’t a Christmas song. Despite its title, it’s not even a Christian song. Franz Schubert set Walter Scott’s poem “The Lady of the Lake” to music, and it’s about a young woman praying a Hail Mary in mortal danger.

Now this sounds like a non-Christmas song I like, doesn’t it?

But how did it end up being a Christmas song? You see, there’s a Latin version, and nobody knows Latin anymore. I learned it in school, but I don’t know it anymore either. So there’s a song in a language people don’t understand with a refrain of “Ave Maria”—must be Christian. Sounds festive—must be a Christmas song. Easy as that. The version I love best is Chris Cornell’s. It starts like many versions, but just before he starts singing, a slow beat gives it a rhythm that reminds me of people slowly, solemnly entering a festive hall.

One More Gift Before We Go

A steamy standalone featuring a blue-collar hero, a heroine who gives as good as she gets, and enough sexual tension to power the fire station. And a corgi. This is a very corgi-friendly romance novella.

When a mountain storm traps a sassy city girl with her ruggedly competent rescuer, sparks fly hotter than lightning.

Sue Ann’s peaceful hike turns into a nightmare when she’s caught in a flash flood. Her gorgeous firefighter rescuer should focus on getting her to safety—but she challenges his authority at every turn and makes him want things he swore he’d never risk again.

Stranded together in his farmhouse, they discover a connection that runs deeper than desire. But their opposite needs could destroy something beautiful before it has a chance to bloom.

Can a small-town hero and a guarded city girl risk their hearts for a love worth fighting for?
