I grew up in Germany, and we had a Christmas tradition I absolutely loved. Every Advent Sunday, German TV would air mini-series adaptations of classic adventure stories—Jack London’s The Sea-Wolf, Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, tales of ships and treasure and danger.
I was hooked. Those Sunday evenings shaped my entire reading life. I devoured every adventure story I could find, and to this day, I can’t imagine Christmas without that sense of epic journey.
Times have changed. There are no more Advent series on German TV. But that craving for adventure at Christmastime? Deeply ingrained.
Enter: Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter.
Perfect, right? Epic journeys, found family, battles against darkness. They fit the bill beautifully. But after years of
